The slight crinkle of the condoms in April’s pockets had bedeviled her ever since Leigh had insisted she take them. She’d never found a convenient time to either return them to Leigh’s bathroom or tuck them in her backpack. Worse yet, she couldn’t decide which of those roads to take.

They crinkled again when she climbed behind the wheel of the Prius for the drive back to her folks’ house. She dared any woman with condoms in her pocket and Ryker in the passenger seat not to think about sex. He filled her peripheral vision—straw hat tugged low, a shadow of a beard, his massive chest stretching his cotton t-shirt. Just listening to him breathe dampened her panties.

He cleared his throat. “I have a plan.”

“For what?”

“Being alone in the house.”

Oh, this should be good. “What’s that?”

“First off, when we get there, I’ll feed the goats and the chickens and tuck them in.”

“What am I supposed to do?” Take a bubble bath and put on a negligee?

“Whatever you want except help me. The less time we spend together, the better.”

“So your plan is total avoidance.”

“Pretty much.”

“Then I guess you don’t want to talk about anything, either.” His plan didn’t have a snowball’s chance in hell, but she was interested in hearing his reasons for thinking they needed one.

“Not tonight.”

“In the morning, then?” She braked at a red light.

“Not then, either.”

“Well, I’m confused.” She glanced over at him. “This morning you seemed to think we weren’t finished with the process of making peace with each other. How can we do that if we don’t talk about it?”

“I don’t know.”

“It’s obvious that we still have issues.” She accelerated as the light changed. “Otherwise we wouldn’t have had that blowup over whether you needed rest after you passed out.”

“And maybe we always will have issues. That’s likely, isn’t it? We see the world differently.”

“I’m sure we do. But I’ll bet we can agree on one thing.”

“What’s that?”

“We turn each other on.”

He blew out a breath. “Which is exactly why I’m proposing that we stay out of each other’s way!”

“That’s one solution.”

“It’s the one I vote for.”

She allowed the silence to lengthen between them.

“I mean, isn’t that what we decided last night?” He sounded a little desperate.

She pulled the car into the drive of her parents’ house. “Guess so.” After shutting off the motor, she turned to gaze at him. “But last night we didn’t think we’d be dealing with this situation again.”

“Nothing’s changed. It’s still a bad idea.” The heat in his blue eyes said something very different.

“All right, but I don’t picture myself running for my bedroom and hiding there the rest of the evening.”

“You don’t have to. I’ll come in after feeding and go straight to mine.”

She shrugged. “If that’s what you want.”

“Hell, April, you know that’s not what I want. But it’s the smart decision.”

“Okay.” She opened her door and got out. He didn’t immediately follow her, so maybe he was dealing with an inconvenient reaction to their conversation.

After unlocking the front door, she glanced back at him.
